LONELY PLANET COMPETITION – ENTRY NUMBER TEN

How We Nearly Missed Eurovision

by Stuart McNaughton

My heart sank as I read the email from SAS.  With just three weeks to go before Eurovision week in Stockholm, my flight from Malta to Stockholm (via Rome) had been changed, so that instead of a 6 hour flight, we would end up with a 13 hour flight via Copenhagen.

Given that we had booked the flights already seven months earlier, I lost my cool because this 13 hour connection meant that we would miss the first Jury show as our flight wouldn’t arrive until after 10pm.  I forwarded the email to Niall, my friend in Australia, assuming he had the same issue because we were meeting up in Malta and then travelling Stockholm together.

It emerged he had the same issue, and that’s when I started to worry: would we get there? Would we have to buy more flights? How much would they cost with just three weeks to go?  After some whatsapp chat, we agreed that it was best that I called SAS from London so I’m patiently waiting to be put through to an SAS Agent.

Sven finally comes on the line, speaking perfect English.  There’s me on the line, blubbering, hollering, begging Sven to check the connections, to see if there’s an alternative to the 13 hour total journey time.  No, explained Sven.  The problem is due to an aircraft being taken out of service from Malta to Rome, therefore missing your connection to Stockholm.  I understood this, I told him, but then I started to explain that I had booked these flights so long ago and to get this information so late in the day was so bad.

In the meantime, Niall was looking at alternative flights with other airlines: the cost was too high, the connection was too bad, or even worse than what SAS were coming back with.  It was only at this time I realised how isolated Malta clearly was.

Sven provided an alternative route, which was only 15 minutes shorter than the 13 hour route.  This is when I lost my temper. “Sven,” I said. “I didn’t want to have to tell you this, but the reason why I must get to Stockholm earlier is because I am part of the Maltese delegation for this year’s Eurovision.”

I heard tapping in the background, and Sven finally spoke: “Can I call you back? I may be able to do something, Mr. Stuart.”  Hmph, I thought.  My name isn’t Mr. Stuart, but let’s focus on the issue here: getting to Eurovision.  I gave him my mobile number and, about an hour later, I get a call from a Danish number.  I answer the call and it’s good and bad news: we still won’t get there in time for the jury show, but our flight time has been reduce to six hours with a flight via Frankfurt.

I was relieved, and thanked Sven.  While the show had to go on, we would be arriving fashionably late, as members of the so-called Maltese delegation.

LONELY PLANET COMPETITION – ENTRY NUMBER SEVEN

My first Eurovision experience by Beth Hackley currently living in Hong Kong
After being fans for years, the stars finally aligned this year which meant that my husband Stuart and I were able to go to our first Eurovision!
I had never been to Scandinavia before, and Stockholm was the perfect host city for my first Eurovision experience, not least, because Sweden is the home of ABBA (and who doesn’t love ABBA)!
Of course, being in Stockholm, a visit to the ABBA museum was high on our list of tourist activities.  We decided to catch the ferry to the museum so we could delight in the beautiful weather and the stunning sights of Stockholm on the way.
The ABBA museum was absolutely wonderful – so well curated and such an extensive collection of ABBA memorabilia from around the world. Speaking of which, we were delighted to run into Roy at the “Ring Ring” exhibit, fresh from delivering his cache of ABBA collectables from South Africa – where we snapped this amazing photo!
When people ask me what my first Eurovision experience was like, I tell them that it was like the Olympics – the same great vibe, friendly people and electric atmosphere in the air.
I can’t wait for Ukraine in 2017!

LONELY PLANET COMPETITION – ENTRY SIX

My first Eurovision Song Contest: Stockhölm 2016 by Enrique Lopez de Vallejo

I am a follower of the ESC since I was a child. But I have always followed it from a distance, from “my living room”. Internet and new technologies allow us to get very close to the details surrounding ESC but, after several years of all kind of difficulties, I decided to fulfill my dream.

This special journey began in January, when the Spanish broadcaster announced when and where would be chosen Spanish entry. I managed to attend the show and I could see the special atmosphere accompanies all related to ESC.

Just then I set my mind to go to Stockhölm. It was a bit late because I didn’t belong to any official fan club and, as is well known, there are a lot of difficulties to get tickets. After having contacted OGAE Row I received all the help I didn’t get from the fan club of my country. I got a mail telling me that a member of OGAE ROW, due to work commitments, couldn’t attend and how I could buy his package.

After several weeks of making arrangements, at long last, I arrived in Stockhölm. I traveled alone but, from the beginning, I could check it would be a great time. I never felt lonely. In fact, I met the first eurofan when I was trying to open my room door at the hotel. Two strangers, from Germany and Spain, who spent the evening and lived the first semi-final dress rehearsal show together, as if they knew each other for a long time.

That was the beginning of a few unforgettable days, exploring a beautiful city, meeting new people from all around the world and enjoying the ESC events. And it could say that I have “Stockholm Syndrome ” (if I may make the joke): memories come flooding in and trapping me since I got back to my routine and it is a rare day that I do not find myself humming a song of this year. I guess it is due to a long-awaited desire for going and living it. Or because it has been one of the few really good things that I have enjoyed in the recent past. I am therefore convinced this will be a turning point in my life.

UKRAINE – LONELY PLANET ENTRY NUMBER 1

We have received the first entry to our lonely planet competition – from SOPHIE LLOYD
Stockholm 2016 was my first time to Eurovision and I had such a great weekend. I traveled with my boyfriend Harry and my friends Abi and Sam. We went to the jury final on the Friday night and although that was clearly the main highlight, one of the most memorable times was on the Friday afternoon when we had just arrived and went to meet our friends Beth and Stuart for a drink. They live in Hong Kong so we hadn’t seen them for a while and they were perched out on a pontoon on the water with a whole group of people drinking rose and sitting in the sun. Stockholm looked so beautiful. Everyone we met was also going to Eurovision and we were all so excited and looking forward to the show. It really showed the best of Eurovision – bringing people together from all around the world and the chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones!

Joe & Jake will represent United Kingdom on Saturday at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. The boys were invited with press and invited guests to the British Embassy in Stockholm. The elegant surroundings were perfect in a beautiful building by a lake.

Joe & Jake proved to be true ambassadors themselves as they mingled with the guests and performed a great version of their Eurovision entry You’re Not Alone.

Douwe Bob from the Netherlands hosted a special event at the opening of his Fool Bar in Stockholm last night. Douwe Bob performed a short set on with his band and invited Amir from France to join him on the stage. Douwe Bob gave a great version of his Eurovision entry, Slow Down.

The PS Bar was tightly packed with invited guests that included many performers from different countries including Zoë (Austria), Sergey (Russia), Sandhja (Finland), Minus One (Cyprus), Barei (Spain) and Jüri Pootsmann (Estonia).

Artists and journalists and fans partied the night away in the small but charming venue. All the acts got on the stage at the end of the set to do a rousing version of Hey Jude by the Beatles.

LOVE SHINE A LIGHT COMPETITION

The next competition focuses on Cole van Dais. The competition is in two parts.

Part 1

A brand new CD can be won – it is a duet CD by Cole with duets by several artists – the index will be discussed in greater detail later but there is the song LOVE SHINE A LIGHT which is a duet between Cole and Katrina (from the waves) and a Soweto choir.

Part 2

This is a Cole t-shirt – very beautiful as you can see on the picture.

To win the CD, you have to list the name of won Eurovision song (besides Love shine a light) which she has covered. You can just say Belarus 2008 or whatever. This is for any fan reading this post.

To win the t-shirt, you have to write how will you wear it in Stockholm, to what event – like I could say I will wear it when I do a shift at the fan stand. This therefore is only for people who will be physically in Stockholm, as the winner will have to wear it one day so a photo can be taken

LIGHTHOUSE X WILL LIVE-STEAM INTIMATE SHOW

On April 25th at 8pm, Lighthouse X will deliver a special and intimate show. It will be live-streamed online, making it possible for everyone to attend the show in the comfort of their own home – completely free. During the show, the audience can ask the Danish representatives of the Eurovision Song Contest questions, which they will answer live.

In May, Stockholm will host the Eurovision Song Contest, and the Danish representatives are called Søren Bregendal, Johannes Nymark and Martin Skriver – also known as Lighthouse X. They are representing Denmark with their uplifiting pop hit, Soldiers of Love.

Before Lighthouse X travel to Sweden and participate in the grand show, they are inviting everyone to join them for a quite different performance – an intimate concert. And it will not be the regular kind of intimate show, as it will be live-streamed, allowing everyone to attend the concert in the comfort of their own home – completely free.

An interactive experience for the audience

The show takes place on April 25th at 8pm, and fans of the band can look forward to experiencing the band play their most popular songs in the very special setting. The concert can be experienced through this link – please note that registration is required to gain access: www.tinyurl.com/lhx-intim

It will also be an interactive experience for the audience, as they can ask Søren, Johannes and Martin questions during the show, which they will answer lively. The Lighthouse X members will also share both fun and moving stories.

Back to basics before the trip to Stockholm

“We are really looking forward to trying out this format, as it is both very intimate and far-reaching all at once,” Søren Bregendal explains and continues:

“It will be an exciting and challenging contrast to the big Eurovision performance, which we are also busy preparing for. It will be a back to basics performance, and I think that’s healthy for us. And regardless of the format, our mission always stays the same – to make a positive change through music, because we have an honest belief that music can unite people in a way that no other ways of communication can.”

Melodifestivalen 2016 – Semi Final 4 Tonight

melodifestivalen-2016-logo

deltavlingfyra1920-jpg

Welcome to the last week of semi finals before visiting next week’s Andra Chansen (Second Chance).  This week we visit the Gavlerinken in Gävle to decide which two songs will qualify for the final on the 12 March and which two songs will go to the Andra Chansen on the 5 March.  Gina Dirawi will be joined by Sarah Dawn Finer this week for hosting duties.

The fourth semi-final is packed full of returning participants but there are a few debut artists as well which make cause some upsets tonight.

1 Eclipse “Runaways” – Predict Andra Chansen

This hard rock group has been going since 1999 and have released 6 albums so far.  Their lead singer, Erik Mårtensson, has written their debut Melodifestivalen entry “Runaways.”  The song is a typical rock number by very much a catchy one that you could sing along to after one listen.  I think it is good enough tocarry on in the competition as their performance is solid but is it really Eurovision?

2 Dolly Style “Rollercoaster” – Predict Andra Chansen

Who could forget “Hello Hi”, Dolly Style’s debut last year which just missed out on a place in the final.  With only one of the three original members, Dolly Style is back this year with “Rollercoaster.”  The is song is everything that Bubblegum Pop should be, instantly catchy, sickeningly sweet and repetitive but I feel the song and performance is missing something.  Although with their popularity they should easily progress to Andra Chansen again this year.

3 Martin Stenmarck “Du Tar Mig Tillbaks” (You Take Me Back) – Predict 7th Place

Former Melodifestivalen winner, Stenmarck is back for his third attempt with a Swedish language ballad.  The only issue here the song feels dated and feels like an old Irish entry that has been translated.  Compare that with a lacklustre performance and you go home unfortunately.  This is Stenmarck’s weakest entry to date and will be very surprised if places higher than last.

4 Linda Bengtzing “Killer Girl” – Predict 6th Place

I’m not sure if the semi final is about weak entries for returning artist or what but here we are again with Linda Bengtzing, sixth time entrant with possibly her weakest entry to date as well. “Killer Girl” has the potential to have been a Schlager classic but it just feels a bit recycled with an attempt to update the Schlager sound.  I think she will struggle to qualify even with her fan base.

5 Frans “If I Were Sorry” – Predict Finalist

Known for his football anthems, Frans has had little experience in the mainstream arena.  His debut Melodifestivalen entry, “If I Were Sorry” has a real message behind the song and Frans delivers it with passion.  One of the surprise favourites tonight due to his near spotless rehearsal could very well qualify for the final amongst so many big names.  Although not my favourite style of music, I must give him credit as he has a song that could very well change his career.

6 Panetoz “Håll Om Mig Hårt” (Hold Me Tight) – Predict 5th Place

Panetoz are back after a year break with their new entry “Håll Om Mig Hårt” which is stylistically like their music and first entry “Efter Solsken”, which finished in 9th place, but it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.  Their boy band African style dance fusion has done well in Sweden and even gave them a number one but they haven’t since matched that success.  Tonight I feel that they won’t be making any further accomplishments to their career.

7 Molly Sandén “Youniverse” – Predict Finalist

So onto the favourite, not only of the semi final but of the whole contest.  Molly Sandén has participated twice before and has gone direct to the final both times.  Why should the former Miss Eric Saade, now Miss Danny Saucedo, not qualify tonight as well.  The song leaked due to a site giving a presale clip of the single but SVT allowed all the songs to be available for 24 hours to make it fair.  Her rehearsal has been criticised but it was always going to be as she is the one everyone is watching.  The song was co-written by her and Saucedo and I think the performance is good enough to get her direct to the final without worry.

What do you think?
