R S G SERIES ON THE SONGS FROM THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST – episode 6

The sixth episode started at 18.10 on Sunday 6 August July. Elsje van Jaarsveld presented it while Ilse Schurmann wrote the text and produced the show.

This episode again ended after 20 minutes at 6.30 pm. During that time, 5 songs were played.

SONG 1 was UN DEUX TROIS by CATHERINE FERRY. She represented France at the 1976 Eurovision song contest in The Hague, Netherlands. She sang it in French, but also recorded English, German and Spanish versions. She reached position 2, behind the winner from the UK Save your kisses for me by Brotherhood of man. The song was covered in various languages, among them Afrikaans. Glenys Lynne of the group Four Jacks and a Jill recorded it as Een twee drie. A very young Nadine also covered it in Afrikaans.

SONG 2 was SI by GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI for Italy. Ten years after she won for Italy in 1964, she tried again and reached position 2 because the winner Waterloo of Abba. Gigliola also recorded a German version as well as an English version called GO (BEFORE YOU BREAK MY HEART). This was released on a vinyl single in South Africa.

SONG 3 was FAIRYTALE by ALEXANDER RYBAK.  He represented Norway in 2009 at the Eurovision song contest in Moscow. It was a clever move of the Norwegian public to select him as he is from Belarus originally. He was the bookmakers favourite to win and he achieved the biggest winning margin at that time. Elsje encouraged during the show for listeners to go and watch his song on Youtube to see how well he plays the violin. Lee Scott covered the song in Afrikaans and with his manager at the time, Nelius Ferreira, went to Oslo in 2010 when Norway hosted. Lee got a chance to sing his Afrikaans cover WONDERLAND at a private function of the Norwegian broadcaster.

SONG 4 was A BA NI BI by IZHAR COHEN & THE ALPHABETA. They represented ISRAEL at the Eurovision song contest. They emerged as the winners and gave Israel their first victory. R S G played the English version of the song. It was sung in Hebrew at the contest. The vinyl single of the song was released in South Africa.

SONG 5 was an English version of the 1984 Eurovision entry from the Netherlands. MARIBELLE sang it as IK HOU VAN JOU in Dutch. The song was not a big success and reached only position 13. There are several reasons for this, but many felt she wore an ugly dress and people looked at the dress rather than listen to the song. Maribelle also recorded English, German and French versions. Ten years later DANA WINNER from Belgium recorded the song in Dutch, English, French and German and had a massive hit with it. It was also the song that introduced Dana to the South African public as it was the title track of her first CD released in South Africa – IN LOVE WITH YOU. Various other South African artists also recorded it, both in English and Afrikaans. The list is quite long but among others who recorded it are Andriette Norman, Andre Smit, Danie Jansen, Eden, Ella Kotze, Ge Korsten, Jannie Moolman, Natasha Joubert and Rudi Claase with Charne Hugo.

Once again, the show was very entertaining and we are looking forward to the remaining 7 episodes.
