POSITION 12 IN THE 2023 EUROVISION – CYPRUS

Morten Thomassen from Norway started reported on the final positions of the 37 entries in the 2023 Eurovision song contest. ESC Covers google translated it from Norwegian to English.

This is a blog entry and represents only writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.

Today’s contribution is the only single guy in the 120-point club, which this year consists of a total of 6 countries, and Andrew Lambrou was only 3 points short of becoming a top-10 participant and had to settle for 12th place instead.

He got 68 points from the jury and 58 from the people, so in that sense they were pretty much in agreement and, strangely enough, “only” 16 points from Greece, where it was the jury that thought the song didn’t deserve more than 4 points, well they’re on that.

“Break A Broken Heart” was sung by young Mr Lambrou, who is actually Australian, and by the way he got a total of 11 points from it, so a total of 25 points from so-called safe donors to him.

The rest of us who do not have such a close relationship with Australian-Cypriot guys got to see a well-built guy sing a song composed by Nordic authors performed in a pretty good way.

Vocally, almost as much muscle was shown as he has in his upper arms and I think he has just the right amount of intensity in his performance.

He chose to stand alone on stage and it was possibly not the wisest choice, even though he puffs with flames towards the end of the song, he still doesn’t really get the performance going.

There is something tame about it and at times perhaps a little bland, also all the while much of the performance takes place on a fairly darkened stage.

So there were probably some other slightly big ballads that drew a few longer straws this evening, but 12th place is by no means bad for this island nation which has to struggle with the stamp of being the country with the most participations without winning.

After 2013, there is only one time this country has not qualified for the final and they are probably wondering what they have to do to finally punch in a winning song, they undoubtedly deserve to do it soon.
