Mario van Tongeren from Amsterdam attended Eurovision in concert 2023 last night and ESC Covers this report.
Last night, another large pre-party was held, and this time it was in Amsterdam. 27 of this year’s contestants performed their entry. I attended it to be your eyes and ears and some notable things happened.
Loreen from Sweden gave her best vocal performance of “Tattoo” so far, the two Melodifestivalen performances included. It was barely possible to distinguish last night’s performance from the studio version.
Käärijä from Finland also delivered a very stable performance, and the audience had a very similar reaction to the one it had for Loreen. Next month, this battle of Nordic neighbours will be settled at last, as there is little doubt on my mind that one of the two will most probably win the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool.
Voyager from Australia gave an excellent live performance. It was already spectacular without being on the big Eurovision stage, and I’m beginning to think a top 10 placing may well be on the cards for this.
Performance wise, Lord of the Lost from Germany were also very strong, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they also do better next month than is currently predicted by the bookmakers.
There are few acts that really need to fix some vocal issues, one way or another. Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper from the Netherlands gave a better performance than they did at the Madrid pre-party, but were still both struggling to find the key, even with a more prominent backing track supporting them.
Another vocalist who has work to do is Mae Muller from the United Kingdom. While the chorus is alright, she is vocally weak in the verses of the song. Now, this can be fixed at the Eurovision by either adding more backing vocals, or by increasing the volume of the backing track and decreases that of her microphone. The UK delegation will have to think of something to make this sound good, one way or another.
Blanka from Poland and La Zarra from France were planned to perform, but unfortunately dropped out of the line-up. According to the hosts, health issues were the reason for that.
While there are no recordings of the full performances uploaded anywhere by the organization of this pre-party, some of the other fansites have placed full videos of their recordings on YouTube.
