ESC COVERS started to look at 1 or 2 highlights from every Eurovision song contest from 1970 to 2023. This may be an actual entry, a cover from that year or just a specific artist.
Today it is 1974 and what a year. Luxembourg could not host two years in a row, so the United Kingdom stepped in and hosted it at the Dome theatre in Brighton. Only 17 countries took part as France without drew to the death of president George Pompidon.
Bjorn, Benny, Anna and Frida at that stage was already known in some countries and even had 2 number one hits in South Africa.
But for Eurovision 1974 they called themselves ABBA and entered with an English song called WATERLOO and won. Interesting is that the United Kingdom did not award them points, yet the song also became a number 1 hit there.
World-wide it was so successful and lead the way for ABBA to become a household name, probably the most successful group in the world (together with the Beatles).
