It is now 15 days to the 2024 Eurovision final in Malmo, Sweden. For 20 days running I will highlight one song from each of the last 20 years and I have started with 2004. Now with 15 days to go it this the 2009 Eurovision.
The 2009 Eurovision song contest took place in MOSCOW, RUSSIA, the first and only time they have hosted.
After 8 years in a row, a new country won the Eurovision song contest. This was broken when NORWAY won their 3rd Eurovision. The song is FAIRYTALE by ALEXANDER RYBAK.
2009 was a special year in that all entries from the NORDIC countries were covered in Afrikaans. Interesting is that the 1st and 2nd place songs, Norway and Iceland did not sell that well. The other 3, SWEDEN, FINLAND and DENMARK all got platinum status. Finland in particular became the biggest seller of a Finnish composed song in South Africa.
The Afrikaans cover is called EK VAL VIR JOU (I fall for you) by MONIQUE (STEYN) & SNOTKOP.
