In 2016, when the Eurovision song contest was hosted by Sweden in Stockholm, ESC Covers decided to surprise RICHARD HERREY, one of the 3 brothers of the group THE HERREYS with an AFRIKAANS cover of their 1984 Eurovision winner DIGGI LOO DIGGI LEY.

Roy explains:

‘Michael de Lange wrote Afrikaans lyrics and we tried to find some young males to sing the song. We approached several of these singing schools to help us with singers without success (I won’t go into the reasons why it did not work). Finally we found a company who would do the recording and they found two session singers who recorded it’

‘Unfortunately due to the rush nature of the project (I had to have the final recording before leaving for Stockholm), there was no time to do a cover with a picture of the guys’

‘I was invited to HARD ROCK CAFE in Stockholm, of which Richard is the owner and when he entered, we played the Afrikaans version to him. He was bowled over’
