Experiencing Eurovision History

This morning sitting having breakfast and messaging with Eurovision friends I became aware the German final was on.  Little did I know when I zapped across to Safari and typed in eurovision.tv that I was about to experience, first hand, a piece of Eurovision history.  I had been told two acts were fighting it out and so while we chatted and made observations I started to watch the final contestant.  Andreas Kummert instantly won me with Heart of Stone.  Finally, after what had been shaping as a very lack lustre year, here was a great meaty rock ballad with a touch of soul.  For us in Australia it would be like a facially forested and balding Jimmy Barnes.

As I listened and messaged I felt this was not only the winner for Germany but would offer such a nice contrast on the Eurovision stage in Vienna.  Could this be the overall winner?  Why Not?  I loved it.  What song had I heard this year and instantly loved?  O.  So as he concluded I was rapt to find it and a Euro friend  was messaging his disappointments with Germany last year and Unhelig and now hopefully all was well with the world.  We waited.  We watched the countdown. We saw what many are unfortunately describing as Lena 2.  And then the moment.  The announcement.  I sat there willing, crossing my fingers, hoping that the balding, well forested face would appear on the big screen….. and…..there it was!!!

I was over the moon.  The future looked rosy.  Eurovision 2015 had been saved and I thought I was so lucky to turn to it and see this moment.  But hang on.  My schoolyear’s German kicked in.  I didn’t like the look on his face.  The look on the announcer’s face.  She actually looked like ” Tell me this isn’t true, not me, not now, what the hell do we do, where is that hole I can crawl into?”

I think he was saying NO?   Surely not?  Ann Sophie looked upset.  She looked like she was a rabbit in the spotlight.  No idea what was happening.  How to react.  And yes in that instant I saw the joy of Eurovision turn to sour cream.  They embraced, with Ann still not sure what had happened.  Had there been a death in the family?  No and Andreas just slowly slinked off the stage having handed his title to her.  So the best song in Germany by a mile disappears in a puff of Black Smoke and we are given leftovers.  I feel for Ann, for the many who spent their hard earned coin on the voting only to find they didn’t get that song or artist, for my friend who  was already dudded by Unhelig last year and sat like a stunned mullet trying to work out, what is it that these Germans torture him every year, and me.  I only turned it on near the end. I heard a song I instantly loved. I felt euphoric when it won.  I still don’t know what I feel 12 hours later…..

——————————————————————————–
A lot has happened the past few days and I am still in a very emotional stage and will wait with some announcements until I am more clear about what to do. It is, however, important to announce a new addition to the R O W structure with immediate effect.

MICHAEL DE LANGE has been appointed to the R O W board.
He is one of the few South African members who is NOT a recording artist but he has years of experience in the SA music business. He is a tough business person and unlike me, who is ruled by sentiment when it comes to Eurovision, he takes rational decisions.
This has been necessary in the light of various incidents especially some recent ones.

Obviously given the situation with the 60th anniversary compilation, it is not possible to put more than 60 covers onto it since EUROVISION is 60 years old and with over 400 covers, it is obvious several covers will just not make their way onto the compilations.

I had taken into account several factors, male/female artists, groups, duo’s, also new versus old recordings, big hits, lesser known songs, fan favourites and Eurovision winners in selecting the 60 songs. I made it clear no artist can have more than one song in a solo capacity even if such a person has recorded 15 covers. I also tried to make sure there is at least one song from each EUROVISION country, although some just were not possible, for example the Czech republic. they have had only 3 entries and none of them were good enough for any artist to want to cover.
Once the 60 songs were selected, I gave the list to 10 people who each had a chance to ELIMINATE one and add something new given the criteria and then we approached singers and say we want this or that recorded and I carry the cost. Well, this is where things went wrong. Cole and I attended a show of a totally unknown singer and there were less than a handful of people attending but he sang a EUROVISION cover and I got excited and offered him a chance to record a duet with Cole for both her duet CD and the compilation. Well, after 4 weeks, he had not even taken the time to respond to this offer – probably thinking he is so important already. This is when Michael came into the picture and told me he knows almost all artists and had come across this guy and he just thinks the world owes him. He then offered that in future he will take over all such requests and make the artists give a business plan etc before we spend money on just covering a song.

Then two record companies last week both approached me for help to get approval for a certain song to be covered in AFRIKAANS but both had the same song in mind. Now obviously the market is too small to have two versions of the same song and it was difficult for me to decide which one has the best merit and Michael took it over and analyzed each application on merit – looking at who will sing it, there profile in the industry and importantly how it will be marketed.

So as of today, I will not help ANY SA artist with a cover unless I get the go-ahead from Michael with a detailed report on the application and with recommendations that this is a viable project.
His involvement in the club matters will purely be focused on the SA side of the club and he won’t have any say in other club matters.
I thank Michael already in advance for taking this on his shoulders because YES,I react emotionally to any suggestion of a EURO cover and then sit with people who have yet to give me the finish product 2 years after they got clearance for the song – the big one is UK 2009 – it is almost 6 years in the making and still NOTHING!

EURO COVERS FROM JAN FROM SLOVENIA

I am putting up a mail we just got from Jan from Slovenia. This is what we love and anybody you have done euro covers, no matter from what country and whatever song you did, we will feature it. This is the main purpose of the website, COVERS.
It’s Jan here from Slovenia, I noticed your website – first of all thanks for Ogae RoW FB team, who published my first Eurovision cover on their facebook page – it was Russian 2014 Eurovision entry “Shine”, which was covered by me & my little sister Linda, available here: http://soundcloud.com/vehar-jan/tolmachevy-sisters-shine-cover-by-jan-lindaA bit more than week ago I actually released one more cover, which is not really Eurovision, but it was part of Melodifestivalen 2007 – it’s “Cara Mia”, originally performed by Måns Zelmerlöw. Cover is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQN4_y3_AJk
If you can help us with promotion with boths songs, we would be more than thankful!Best regards,
Jan Vehar, Slovenia

TOR ENDRESEN & ELISABETH ANDREASSON

In the run-up to the Norwegian selection and the duet between Tor and Elisabeth a song contender as both have been at Eurovision for Norway, it is time to listen to some of their previous songs. The covers of the two CD’s are sort of greatest hits that came out around the years they represented Norway and I got both personally from the artists at Eurovision. Their duet gets my vote for Norway 2015.
