Ukrainian act, Igor Tselyp, talks to ESC Covers

Igor Tselyp is a talented singer from Ukraine. Here he talks about his career path, talks about his music and how the war affected his work.

When did you realize that you wanted to make music and sing?

The realisation that music is what I live for came to me when I was a student, when I started performing on the big stage.

Tell us about your career. What sets you apart from other young artists?

My creative career began when I was very young. Of course, it was not and is not easy. I put a lot of work and effort into achieving something. But, as the saying goes: “water does not flow under a rock,” so you have to work hard and improve yourself, which is what I do.

Tell us about your music. Are your songs mostly by other authors, or do you write them yourself?

Mostly all the songs I wrote were about love, but now I plan to release songs on other topics, including songs by other authors.

What/with whom would you like people to associate you?

I would like people to associate me with an artist who always gives positive emotions and sings with his heart.

Do you have any limitations in musical genres? What do you prioritise?

I don’t see any limitations in musical genres. Over time, love for one genre changes to love for another, it’s normal. At the moment, all my songs are pop, but I also really like rock music.

How has the pandemic and now the war affected you and your work?

When the pandemic started, there was no opportunity to sing live for the public. So I made various videos, recorded songs, and posted them on social media. When the excitement of the coronavirus subsided a bit, I decided to go to my dad’s house in London to earn some money to develop my music career. And soon the war broke out. I still remember the moment when I turned on the TV in the morning, went to YouTube to watch our news, and realized what had started. I had family at home, and all I could think about was their safety. For a while, music faded into the background, but then I realized that this was a very good opportunity to help our military. I organized charity evenings with my friends and sang at various charity concerts. During one charity event where I was invited to sing, we managed to raise an extremely large amount of money. It was over 300 thousand pounds in just one evening. The British really support us a lot. The war helped me to understand the main thing: you do not need to postpone your dreams for later. You have to start working now to make them come true. Our immediate plans are to release new songs and increase our audience.
