ALMOST REACHING THE TOP AT EUROVISION (1989)

Morten Thomassen is writing of a year when the United Kingdom ended in second place. ESC Covers google translated it from Norwegian to English.

If coming second in our beloved competition triggers the question “Why Do I Always Get It Wrong”, our British friends have every reason to ask just that question.

1989 was a year when they had every reason to ask about this because then the group Live Report was only 7 points short of taking the victory from Yugoslavia who would take their only victory.

There were a total of three countries that did not give them points so a victory would have been within reach, but in all fairness it must be said that Yugoslavia also did not get points from three countries, they only got slightly more good scores than our British friends.

Down to a bouncy Danish song in third place, there were 19 points, so you could say a safe silver place.

British groups that take part in the ESC rarely have long careers and for the Ray, John, Brian, Maggie, Mike and Peter in this group they didn’t last the year they formed, perhaps no wonder all that time their song was only a week in on the hit list in his home country and at a rather staggering 73rd place.

I am actually Facebook friends with the vocalist Ray Caruana and he is still active on the music front.

He was born in Malta so he has also participated in a national final there, it was in 1994 and he came second, almost a new trip in the ESC world for him.

Otherwise, I read that the original title of this song was “No More Sad Songs”, and since Ray has now turned 71 years old, one wonders whether he will be able to please the ESC audience with new songs in the future.

But, we have now seen that a second place is never so crazy that it is good for nothing, our British friends will be organizing next year’s international final after all.
