Interview: Rising Italian star Giulia Falcone talks about her new single ‘Underwater’

Giulia Falcone is a rising young star from Italy and she has just released her first official single called Underwater. Giulia took time out to talk to ESC Covers about her new song and about her singing career so far –

Hello Giulia. Before we talk about your new single at what age did you begin to sing, and who are your inspirations in music?

First of all, I really thank you for the opportunity you have given me by doing this interview with you in this prestigious space.

I started studying singing at the age of 11 but music has always been very important in my life since I was very little. At the age of two I sang “Il barbiere di Siviglia” by Gioacchino Rossini, an important Italian composer of the first half of the 19th century, nicknamed
the “Italian Mozart”. I listen to all kinds of music: pop, rock, jazz… also when I do my school homework I listen to classical music, it helps me stay focused on studying. There are so many singing icons that I love, I don’t have a real inspiration, I always try to find a very personal way in interpreting the songs but I aspire to have the vocal mastery of Celin Dion on stage, I think she is extraordinary!

Tell us about some of the songs you have covered.

After having taken part in the selections of the Voice Kids France, and having studied many songs in French, in May 2020 I published on my current Facebook Page and on my all Social Network my first video of a vocal performance of a cover in French entitled “Je suis malade” by Serge Lama on my current Facebook Page reaching more than 25 million views in a few days. This was an unexpected surprise! Very unexpectedly, after only a few months, another video in which I sang a beautiful song entitled «Sos d’un terrien en détresse» by Daniel Balavoine (Michel Berger) has gone viral on Social Networks reaching more than 35 million views and 1 million views on my YouTube Channel in a very short time, receiving the sharing by Sharon Stone on her Social Networks (that I will never stop thanking her) and receiving the personal compliments from Mr.
Leland Sklar, the current bassist of Phil Collins, known for collaborating with countless international musicians including Laura Pausini, Robbie Williams, Carole King, Natalie Koke, Joe
Cocker, Barbra Streisand and other music icons. I have repeated this extraordinary and exciting experience other times with the publication of other videos of my vocal performances such as Phil
Collins ‘song “Against All Odds”, Prince’s song “Purple Rain”, Carpenters’ song “Close To You” and many others. Since then my social channels have become a point of reference where I can reach
a very large number of audiences all over the world and these people who follow me and show me their support and affection have also allowed me to continue developing my artistic projects in
this long and difficult period of the global pandemic that has upset the life of each of us. This is another proof that music unites every ethnic group, every difference in language and culture. I am
very grateful to my audience.

Have you taken part in any music festivals or competitions?

In addition to The Voice Kids in France which I have already talked you about, I have participated in many other national and international competitions. I have won two scholarships, one in Russia and one in London. Here I had the honour of meeting and taking lessons from two extraordinary artists from the London Musical Theatre such as the protagonist of “The Phantom Of The Opera” and the producer of “Les Misérables”. A fantastic experience that I will never forget! I would like to participate in some important Music Festivals, including the Sanremo Festival in Italy, but I also have many other things in mind…this will also depend on how my projects develop in the future!

Now to the exciting news about the release of your official debut single. Please tell us about your song and what it is about and who composed it.

In recent months I have spent a lot of time writing and composing and “Underwater” is the result of my first musical composition that I had put in the drawer for a while. “Underwater” is a song that I wrote at a particular moment in my life, in which some events marked me deeply, it tells a story, my story. The fears of a teenager, the loss of confidence and all those little nuances that
young people perceive in moments of despair. The mind of a teenager my age has no limits, it runs fast, and the small details of a conversation or a gesture lead us to reflect, make us suffer, hope, rejoice or cry. I hope it reaches the hearts of many people. There will also be a video clip which I will announce soon on my Social Networks.

Will your song be available to stream or buy through the popular digital platforms?

Yes, “Underwater” is available on all DigitalStores such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer Apple Music and others, from today (26 November) and I hope that this first single that I love very much, is a
good start for other unreleased songs written also in other languages, which I plan to publish and distribute in the coming months.

Do you watch the Eurovision Song Contest? If so what are your favourite Eurovision songs?

Of course, I watch the Eurovision Song Contest every year, it’s a competition that I’m very passionate about. I really like “Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin and I am very proud that Italy has won
this prestigious award. I also like like Barbara Pravi’s song “Voilá” which finished in second place on the chart. So now let’s see what countries will propose at the next edition of Eurovision!

If you could duet with anybody in the music world, who would you like to sing with?

I would like to sing with Celin Dion, Phil Collins, Sting, Mina, Zaz and at least one hundred other names of artists who have contributed to creating the history of world music and that unfortunately some of them have passed away, leaving the whole community their songs, real and unique pearls!

So, good luck with “Underwater”, Giulia. ESC Covers wishes you lots of good luck.

  1. I have followed Giulia for, it has to be 3 years now, and her voice is truly amazing. I think the first song I heard from her was the Phil Collins song she mentioned, and I was stunned by how well she performed it. I love Phil Collins, and I was in my twenties when ‘Against All Odds’ came out, and I think Giulia sounds better. Sorry Phil. For those of you who haven’t spent any time listening to, and watching this young lady, check out her version of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. It’s a beautiful arrangement, and I have never heard it sound like that. It’s golden.

  2. Realmente, ela tem uma voz linda, assim como o todo. Adoro músicas com esse toque suave. Parabéns.
