Morten Thomassen from Norway reports on the 40 songs in the 2022 Eurovision song contest. He writes in Norwegian and ESC Covers google translate it to English.
There are always some countries that have been doomed to defeat in the semi-finals beforehand, but still make it to the finals.
This year was possibly the biggest surprise among those who qualified the sisters “Systur” from Iceland.
There were probably some chin drops of both joy and astonishment when it turned out that “Med Hækkandi Sol” became the final song.
The song about a sunrise did not manage to get more than a total of 20 points in the final.
The jury and the people were equally fond of this song and the words after the performance “Peace in Ukraine” possibly made the Ukrainians who voted think that this was the evening’s third best song.
In the semifinals, the juries were much more positive to this song, but also there it was our Ukrainian friends who were most generous, but we Norwegians also liked this song, we had it in fourth place.
It is said that the simplest is usually the best and it is a recipe that actually worked in our circus.
Here we had a performance almost devoid of effects, only good polyphonic singing and some artists who came through in the TV route.
There was an authenticity in their smiles that made me believe that it could be a final place and I was right.
It is also nice that the language barriers seem to have been climbed, more and more people do not sing in English and still it goes well.
So if this makes more artists sing in their own language, it is a victory in itself.
After two top-10 places, the result for the year probably feels like a small downturn, but if our Icelandic friends dare to invest in the slightly more unusual and sensational, I think it can get a much better result next year.
For this year’s song was probably musically a bit well standard and maybe a bit boring in many people’s ears, we will be musically challenged by this country next time.
