IK HOU VAN JOU – ALBATROS
Morten Thomassen of OGAE Norway alerted us of another cover of the 1984 Eurovision entry from the Netherlands.
EUROVISION COVER – IK HOU VAN JOU (English)
Maribelle represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision song contest in 1984 with IK HOU VAN JOU. The song has been covered many times – this one is by CILLA BLACK in English as A DREAM COME TRUE.
ONS LIEFLINGE – RUDI & CHARNE
Ten or so years ago, Rudi Claase started the ONS LIEFLINGE concept – a male-female duo. His first female duet partner was CORLEA and they brought out two CD’s. Once they parted ways, Rudi brought in ZITA and one CD was made. Their ways parted as well and then he teamed up with CHARNE and this is their first CD. It is a double CD with CD 1 featuring Afrikaans songs and CD 2 featuring English songs.
On the English CD is two EUROVISION covers. The first is COME WHAT WAY, the winning Eurovision song from Luxembourg 1972 which Vicky Leandros sang as Apres toi in French. The second is IN LOVE WITH YOU,the Dutch 1984 entry which Maribelle sang as Ik hou van jou in Dutch. Both songs have been covered several times before – both in English and in Afrikaans.
There are also two EURO related songs on the CD – I HAVE A DREAM of ABBA and WE’RE GONNA STAY TOGETHER of Vicky Leandros and Tony Christie.
The ONS LIEFLINGE is a good concept but not all songs in the double CD have been made to be sung in duet.
SPOTLIGHT ON EUROVISION COMPOSERS – PIET SOUER & PETER VAN ASTEN
In 1998 Maurice Kroon released a song called WE SLAAN DIE SLAG. Two of the four composers of this song are Eurovision composers:
PIET SOUER who wrote the 1983 Dutch entry SING ME A SONG, sung by Bernadette
PETER VAN ASTEN who wrote the 1984 Dutch entry IK HOU VAN JOU, sung by Maribelle

| Next up is a task for the fashion experts. Netherlands has picked DOUWE BOB as their artist for Stockholm. He appeared on TV with his underpants and a coat and says this is what he would like to wear in Stockholm.
Now we know the Netherlands has had some flops in the clothing department. My best recollection is 1984 when Maribelle sang IK HOU VAN JOUW but all I remember was the dress with the huge bow and the song escaped me totally. Many said Joan Franka also picked the wrong outfit and who will forget Vienna with Trinjntje Oosterhuis and the dress in the first rehearsals – looking like a piece of the puzzle was missing. You must now advice the Dutch delegation as to what would be the best for Douw to wear. |
EUROVISION 60th CELEBRATION – SONG 14 of 60
Next up is a real South African classic with around 15 people having covered it. It is the 1984 song IK HOU VAN JOU of Netherlands, originally sung by Maribelle. The song was introduced to South Africa 10 years after its Eurovision duet when Dana Winner covered it. We have picked the first Afrikaans cover done by boy band EDEN in 2001.
