R S G SERIES ON THE SONGS FROM THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST – episode 4

The fourth episode of the R S G (radio sonder grense) series was broadcast  after 6 pm on Sunday 24 July. Elsje van Jaarsveld presented it while Ilse Schurmann wrote the text and produced the show.

The fourth episode started at 18h10. It ended after 20 minutes at 6.30 pm. During that time, 5 songs were played.

SONG 1 was L’ AMOUR EST BLUE. VICKY LEANDROS represented Luxembourg at the 1967 Eurovision song contest. R S G did not play Vicki’s version, rather the instrumental version by PAUL MAURIAT and his orchestra with the English title LOVE IS BLUE. This song is the second most covered Eurovision song after Volare. Ge Korsten also recorded an English version of it. Vicky was born in Greece but has lived most of her life in Germany. Vicky’s song reached position 4 at the Eurovision.

SONG 2 was the other song VICKY LEANDROS sang at the Eurovision song contest. She again represented Luxembourg. Vicky’s song was in French and is called APRES-TOI. R S G played the English version of it. It is called COME WHAT MAY and reached number one on the South African top 20. Many South African singers covered the song in Afrikaans, and interestingly, unlike the 1973 Luxembourg winner, where all the Afrikaans covers LIEFLIKE DROOM had the same lyrics, these various covers all have their own lyrics. Leonore Veenemans sang it as KOM WAT WIL, Janita Claassen sang it as WIE SAL WEET, Bles Bridges sang it as GLO IN DIE LEWE and Patricia Lewis sang it as JY’S DIE EEN. All the covers were successful.

SONG 3 was BOOM BANG-A-BANG by LULU. She represented the United Kingdom at the 1969 Eurovision song contest and won. But it was not the only winner. A Record four songs ended all on the same points and so there were 4 winners. After this the scoring system was changed to prevent something like this happening again.

SONG 4 was UN JOUR, UN ENFANT by FRIDA BOCCARA. She represented France at the 1969 Eurovision song contest and won, so this is another of the 4 winners from 1969. Anneli van Rooyen covered this song, and in French.

SONG 5 was another winner, this time for Denmark. The song is FLY ON THE WINGS OF LOVE and was performed by THE OLSEN BROTHERS. They are Jorgen and Niels. They represented Denmark at the 2000 Eurovision song contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Although it was their first appearance in Eurovision, they had tried several times to win the Danish selection without success. One of their try’s dates to the 70’s. That song called San Francisco was recorded in Afrikaans by Kurt Darren after they did a new version following their 2000 Eurovision success. I was at the Eurovision in Stockholm that year and the atmosphere in the venue was fantastic with people lighting their mobile phones during the performance. The Olsen brothers became one of the oldest winners in terms of age. Fly on the wings of love was sung in Danish at the Danish selection but due to the change of the language rule, they decided to sing it in English at Eurovision. Nadine as well as Ons eie drie tenore covered the song, also in English and an unknown female singer made a promo single of the song in Afrikaans.

Once again, the show was very entertaining and we are looking forward to the remaining 9 episodes.
