Today South Africa celebrates its national day, 27 April. ESC Covers website and INFE South Africa join in it by celebrating what we think is the first Eurovision entry that featured someone from South Africa.
In 1979 the group DSCHINGHIS KHAN represented Germany with a song with the same name. Ralph Siegel composed the song and Bernd Meinunger wrote the lyrics. The front man of the group, HERMAN LOUIS POTGIETER was a South African and emigrated to Germany. He unfortunately died some years ago.
There is some connection between Herman and Roy van der Merwe of ESC Covers. They attended the same high school in Johannesburg, although Herman had already finished high school by the time Roy arrived in grade 8 at the school.
This month the ESC COVERS website is celebrating also its 7th birthday and yesterday INFE SOUTH AFRICA joined the INFE family of Eurovision fan groups.
