ESC Covers was informed this morning of a possible withdrawal from the 2020 Eurovision song contest in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and we were going OH NO NO and singing the Bernie Paul song. Roy van der Merwe especially is sad as their 2019 entry HEAVEN is his second favourite song of 2019.
But due to financial problems and the high costs of participation in the Eurovision, Montenegrin television will not participate and will not send its representative to Rotterdam. We believe the RTCG broadcaster has tried to prevent withdrawal at all costs, and the European Broadcasting Union has extended the time for Montenegrin to make a decision by October 10. Unfortunately, it was not possible to provide funding to start the country in the competition.
Participation cost in Tel Aviv was higher due to Montenegro being drawn in the first semi final and also their group D MOL had 6 members who all had to be accommodated.
In an announcement made earlier today, the BBC confirmed the UK’s participation in Eurovision 2020 and also gave details of a new selection process for the song and artist.
The UK public will no longer have the opportunity to vote on their preferred choices, as the BBC has dropped the ‘You Decide’ show format which has been used to select the UK entry for Eurovision since 2016 and will instead move back to internal selection.
In a surprise move however, the whole process will be done in collaboration with the music company BMG and therefore it is very likely that both the songwriters and artist will be selected from the labels own extensive roster of artists.
ESC Covers did not really write about all the speculation of 9 cities/towns in the Netherlands that expressed interest to host the 2020 Eurovision song contest. There are enough websites and blogs reporting on that and it is virtually impossible to come up with any new news on such matters.
However, the fact that Amsterdam announced today that it will not host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2020, is quite sad to us since it is the capitol and ESC Covers like the contests to be in the capitol with easier access to the main airport as flying into Europe from South Africa is quite a challenge otherwise.
It seems the capital of the Netherlands cannot submit a suitable venue for the event and so mayor Femke Halsema announced the city’s official withdrawal this afternoon.
