The day started off with Alan Turbery from Australia sending us the news that Carmela Corren passed away.
Norbert from Eurovision – music and beyond then wrote about it and shared it to ESC Covers.
Carmela Corren (13 February 1938 – 16 January 2022) was an Israeli singer and actress. American television producer Ed Sullivan discovered her in 1956 during a work venture in Jerusalem. Carmela, just out of military service in the Israeli army, was persuaded to come to New York to appear on his show.
She later toured South Africa with Cliff Richard and sang in English clubs.
With beginning of the 1960s, Corren became well known in Germany, as well as Switzerland and in Austria. In 1963, she represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song Vielleicht Geschieht Ein Wunder (Maybe A Miracle Will Happen) and finished seventh.
This entry was the first at Eurovision, partially performed in English from a non-English speaking country.
After retiring, she lived in Florida. She died on 16 January 2022, in London, aged 83.
