A NORWEGIAN PERSPECTIVE ON SEMI FINAL 2 IN SWEDISH SELECTION

Morten Thomassen from Norway watched the second semi final of the Swedish 2023 Eurovision selection and here is his views. ESC Covers google translated it from Norwegian to English.

I have an opinion about the songs in the second semi final with our Swedish friends, wasn’t too happy with the first round, will I be more impressed after this one? Lets see.

Melody 1 – Wiktoria

Pop babe with long light curls who can actually sing doesn’t sound like a bad combination. And it probably isn’t either, and the song neither irritates nor excites, and that may be the problem. It feels quite unoriginal and when the artist also appears somewhat unattractive in all her grace, this becomes quite forgettable unfortunately.

Melody 2 – Eden

Something as rare as a very subdued song is what we are served and that can occasionally be a nice thing in this circus. The song has such absolute potential, but I feel it is washed away so it will last. Vocally, it is sometimes exhausting and I am very disturbed by the fact that the vocalist desperately tries to make eye contact with the guitarist without success.

Melody 3 – Uje Brandelius

Every now and then a song comes along that is a giant gem of a song, you know it has no chance in the competition, but on your internal ranking this is possibly the winner. This cozy matter of a song about starting a relationship hit me right in the heart and I just loved the three minutes around the kitchen table with this artist who had a slightly rusty vocal that suited the song perfectly.

Melody 4 – Panetoz

This group is a colorful musical community that performs a firework of a song in both colors and rhythms. The summer mood rushes right into my musical heart when I hear this, and you don’t need that around the middle of February, we don’t. Steady vocals and 5 guys with tons of charm in the TV route rarely hurt, a mood pill in other words.

Tune 5 – Tennessee Tears

Lots of styles this evening and sex tri-pop can occasionally be fine. However, the song we are served just simply fails to capture me. Good vocals and the right charm on the part of the artists lift things up a bit, but a song that I find quite boring and bland pulls it down quite a bit. You know something is wrong when the background images are considered better than the song.

Melody 6 – Maria Sur

This song cracks me up. On the one hand, magnificent vocals and lots of strength and empathy in the performance. On the other side, really a shitty boring song where little happens and what happens is so predictable that you almost get annoyed. Maybe I need to get the song under my skin a little more before I join this journey, right now I can spare myself.

Melody 7 – Theoz

Sometimes a boy band can actually only consist of one person, you just add dancers to get the same effect. This guy actually manages to sing and dance so well at the same time that I can’t find anything to complain about in that area. Throw in a lot of charm and I don’t need more to be sold enough for me to be so generous towards a type of music I rarely appreciate so much.

Shall we say that this week’s semi-final was a slight uptick from last weekend, but I’m still waiting for a song like that over high ESC level above.

We will see Maria Sur and Panetoz again in the final, while Tennessee Tears and Theoz will get another chance.

And next weekend our Swedish friends get a great Norwegian visit in their semi-final.
