Morten Thomassen from Norway started reported on the final positions of the 37 entries in the 2023 Eurovision song contest. ESC Covers google translated it from Norwegian to English.
This is a blog entry and represents only writer Morten Thomassen’s own views.
Our Spanish friends are always wholeheartedly in favor of their ESC contribution and this year’s contribution “Eaea” was no exception, unfortunately for these same Spanish friends they are all too rarely paid very well for their efforts.
After last year’s third place, the hopes were high that Blanca Paloma would achieve something similar and if you were to believe the bookmakers it was something that was within reach, so then 17th place was probably a pretty big disappointment really.
As expected, Blanca did quite well with the juries and had scored a whopping 95 points with them, but the people turned their thumbs somewhat and with only 5 points from them it actually meant last place on that particular results list.
So why did this song have very little impact on those watching on TV this Saturday night, was the mix of flamenco and syncopated beats so unappealing?
Well, here was a show that was sensational enough, there was tons of empathy and little to complain about when it comes to the vocals.
But, in a strange way, the song is rather stagnant and if you don’t have the sense for this kind of music, the song will probably come across as very screamy and thus perhaps not so similar.
I love the intensity of the song, but understand well those who found it more fussy than intense and there is also very little happening in the song and it is so different that it will possibly be difficult to place it in a musical box and then it will have to wander its own way with most people and then it doesn’t find its way to the scoring I should think.
No, probably think that our Spanish friends will have to find someone more catchy and maybe finally take the ESC scalp again, their last victory celebrates 55 years and may be ready for a replacement soon.
